Mince Pie Project raises nearly £30,000 for charity

Dan DohertyDan Doherty's gingerbread mince pies with a cream cheese orange frosting have helped raise nearly £30,000 for the Mince Pie Project, in support of Galvin's Chance and homeless charity Crisis.

The head chef at Duck and Waffle atop London's Heron Tower was among a stellar cast of 100 UK chefs with almost 60 Michelin stars between them, who all contributed their own unique batch of 50 mince pies for the Christmas charity auction. His pies sold for £1,900 contributing to the overall total of £29,147.29.

Commenting on the auction Doherty said: "I can't believe I came first, I'm completely stunned. But it's not about being competitive. It's a great cause and to help raise money for two such great charities at Christmas time is brilliant."

In second place was double-Michelin-starred Scottish chef Martin Wishart, whose mice pies made with light pastry and a blend of exotic spices sold for £1,825. Third was Mark Poynton from the Michelin-starred Restaurant Alimentum in Cambridge, whose hay smoked mince pies, with truffle and apple mincemeat fetched £1,750.

A savoury duet of 72-hour braised British Wagyu short rib and Christmas spiced duck confit infused with a blend of cinnamon, mace, clove, pickled Meyer lemon and soaked prunes abed a sweet pastry dusted by brandy sugar from James "Jocky" Petrie, head of creative development - the experimental kitchen for the Fat Duck, sold for £1240.

Other recipes included cherries, almonds, cognac and a secret, melt-in-your-mouth pastry recipe from André Garrett, Galvin at Windows; spiced, candied organic winter fruit, spiked with money-can't-buy 1966 Invergordon Highland whisky from Andrew Fairlie, Restaurant Andrew Fairlie; and spiced banana and custard encased in short crust pastry from Dan Loftin, Kensington Place.

The Mince Pie Project was started last year by fundraiser Pete Butler, who described the auction as a unique opportunity to get your mince pies cooked by a top chef, and donate money to two great causes.

Last year, 36 chefs helped to raise £10,000 for Action Against Hunger and the Jamie Oliver Foundation.
